Top Canon 70D Lenses To Buy 2020

1. Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Lens

Outstanding addition to Canon’s EF lenses series, the Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Lens is quite reasonably priced at $129. The lens has a lightweight design, and it can be carried with ease.

Canon has utilized super spectra coatings in this lens that provide excellent color balance while minimizing flare and ghosting at the same time. Despite the all-plastic construction, the lens still appears to be solidly built. The focusing ring of the lens is very narrow, although it comes with a high-grade rubberized grip band. This technologically advanced STM lens is compatible with all EOS cameras introduced by Canon since 1987.

We tested the Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Lens for auto-focusing and found out that it is not an excellent performer as it took about 0.3 seconds to focus on the subject. The focal length and the filter size of this lens are 100mm and 67mm, respectively.

The distortion and chromatic aberrations are well-controlled with this lens. Owing to its f/2.8 aperture and superb optical performance, it is ideal for street, portrait, travel and landscape photography.

Exclusively built for Canon Digital SLR Cameras, this lens comes with a wide-open aperture and delivers top-notch image quality. Composed of top-grade plastic, it has a solid feel to it. Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 has a generous zoom range, and it comes with phenomenal scratch-resistant finishing to ensure that there is no compromise on looks. We tested the lens in low-lit surroundings, and it produced beautiful sharp pictures owing to its four-stop image stabilization system.

The seven-bladed aperture of the lens facilitates the capturing of images with a smooth transition and eye-catching bokeh. It comes with an ultrasonic motor that offers quiet focus control along with a full-time manual override. The focus ring remains stationary and does not move when shooting in autofocus mode.

This lens comes with optimized coatings that significantly reduces overall ghosting and flare. With a focal length ranging from 24-136mm, this lens has 3 aspherical elements and 1 UD glass element. The aperture range of the lens is not that great, but it works well for most purposes.

3. Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Standard Zoom Lens

We would call the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Standard Zoom Lens one of the best full-frame compatible lenses available at present. It performed impressively in terms of image quality as well as autofocus (AF) speed and accuracy in our tests.

There is no doubt that the lens was engineered with perfection in mind as we discovered that it focuses quite fast. The closest focusing distance we obtained was 0.38 meters (1.25 feet). Across the frame, it features remarkable contrast even when shot at f/2.8, which is a notable feature of this lens. A striking difference that can be pointed out is that the lens features its zoom ring on the rear.

We also found that the lens offers excellent weather sealing, making it one of the most suitable lenses to do time-lapse concept even if you are not a professional. In terms of construction, it has coatings of fluorine on its front as well as rear areas, which helps in keeping the lens safe from grease and moisture. We noticed that this made the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II easy to clean. It has a hood that helps in keeping out unwanted sunlight and in successfully reducing flare.

The Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens is undoubtedly one of the best options available if you need an ultra-wide-angle lens that is remarkably sharp.

We concluded that the overall performance of the lens is quite impressive. The lens successfully delivers image sharpness at a high level. The accuracy, as well as autofocus (AF) speed, matched the prime-grade sharpness feature. The image stabilization (IS) of this lens comprises a system that left us mind-blown with its stellar execution.

The design of the lens is quite sophisticated and the f/4 aperture helps it to be distinguished from other lenses. 8. Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras

Ever been spellbound by a beautiful landscape and wished it could be translated into a photograph? Now, you can do just that with the new Canon EF 50mm lens. This lens comes with super-fast autofocus, which means that you can capture your important moments, which you cannot with a manual lens. Also, shooting at 1.2 or focusing on a specific area of an image will require some getting used to on this lens.

How to Choose Best Canon EOS 70D Lens?

  • Zoom Factor – There is nothing like a large telephoto with a 5X zoom factor for taking photos of a lighthouse two miles away. You have to keep in mind that the more the zoom, the less the maximum aperture you will get with most lenses. More expensive lenses like the Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 Sports DG OS HSM in our review provide constant low aperture.
  • Lens Diameter – Commonly lenses have a diameter between 49 mm and 72 mm. A Macro lens has a larger diameter due to its large aperture. For every diameter of the lens in your kit, you need to buy a different size filter set.
  • Elements and Groups – Each lens inside the barrel is known as an element. A combination of two or more lenses is a group. The Canon 70-200mm f/4L IS, has 20 lenses arranged in 15 groups. As a rule of thumb, more elements are better, but more elements may also cause distortion. The actual results may vary, and you have to look at sample photos on the net carefully before choosing one combination over another.

FAQs for Best Canon EOS 70D Lenses

1. Why are interchangeable lens cameras better?

It is because by separating out the sensor and exposure mechanism in the body with the light filtering part in the lens, you get better results. This is the reason SLR and DSLRs are dominant. Better image quality, sharper picture, superior color reproduction makes an interchangeable lens camera like EOS 70D desirable.

2. What does the alphabet on the side of a Canon lens mean?

  • IS stands for image stabilization in the lens.
  • EF-S is for cropped sensor lenses.
  • EF is full-frame lenses.
  • L is the premium line of Canon lenses.
  • Roman Numerals indicate the generation of the lens.
  • USM means Ultrasonic Motor.

Hence Canon EF-S 50-200 mm f/2.8-4 USM means the focal length is from 50 to 200 mm, maximum aperture 2.8 to 4, for cropped sensor and with Ultrasonic Motor.

3. Should I buy a Macro lens?

The real purpose of a Macro lens is an extreme close up (like those of insects on a leaf). It would depend on how much you are willing to spend because a high-quality Macro lens can set you back by several hundred dollars. If you are not going to perform a lot of close up photography it is better to rent one.

4. Why are my pictures not good enough even though I am using the right lens?

The main reason most photos look dull is due to a lack of light. However, an expert photographer can adjust ISO, aperture, and exposure perfectly to compensate. At the end of the day, no matter how much you rely on technology, it is an art that has to be learned slowly.

5. Can I learn photography with no autofocus?

It is actually better to learn photography without autofocus. You get to understand the camera system better in that way. But after the first couple of months, many start to use autofocus. Also, those who have bad eyesight tend to use autofocus more.

Verdict

Though it is really hefty at 1500 grams, the Tamron SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di VC G2 is worth its weight. Really sharp and with excellent low light performance, it is surprisingly refined. In our test photos, we found very little vignetting and barrel distortion. It is expensive but worth every cent.

The runner up was the nifty Canon EF 24-70mm F/2.8L II USM. It has excellent optical specifications and cannot be outperformed easily. Easy to carry, it is a truly perfect all-day lens.
