For many years, Zakia Zaki was the director of Radio Sohl (Peace Radio) in Jabal-Saraj, north of Kabul, the first independent radio station operating in Afghanistan after the fall of the Taliban. She was also headmistress of the local girls’ school, and in 2005 ran for parliament. In the wake of warnings from local commanders to tone down her reporting, Zakia was assassinated in June 2007. She was thirty-five years old. Her killers have still not been brought to justice.
