Gelati Four Gospels (Q-908), 12th cent.; 26 x 18.8 cm; 293 folios; parchment; nuskhuri hand; site: Black Mountain, Syria; the manuscript is bound in a reveted silver cover (18th cent.); the upper and lower sides of the cover feature the “Crucifixion” and “Anastasis”, on the spine: images of the Evangelists; adorned with precious stones (emerald, turquoise, ruby and pearl); artistic ensemble of the Four Gospels: Deisis composition on the title page, 14 arches; vignettes, numerous illuminated initial letters, portrait images of the Evangelists, 267 miniatures illustrating the content. All miniatures are executed on gold foil ground. Appended to the Four Gospels is a letter of King Abgarus illustrated with 12 miniatures. The MS is designed by three artists, their miniatures stylistically differing from one another.
