Martynas Mazvydas
Catechismusa prasty szadei…
Karaliaucius: H. Weinrich Pr., 1547. [79] p.
The first book in the Lithuanian language. It was compiled and published by Martynas Mazvydas (ca.1510-20 - 1563), the founder of Lithuanian written works, and a Reformation activist. The book was published in Koenigsberg (now Kaliningrad, Russia) with funding from Albrecht Brandenburg, a duke of Prussia and patron of Lithuanian Reformationists. Along with a catechism, the book contains the rudiments of the Lithuanian language, and a small hymnal. The preface in Lithuanian verse is the first example of Lithuanian fictional literature in this format. Approximately 200 copies were printed; only 2 have survived, and are held at the Vilnius University Library, and the Torun University Library in Poland.
