A collection of sermons by J. Bretkunas (1536-1602), celebrated representative of Lithuanian written works from East Prussia. In 1589 he had published a hymnal called Giesmes duchaunos (Spiritual Hymns), a small collection of hymns called Kancyonalas, and a prayer book called Kollectas. J. Bretkunas was the first in the history of Lithuanian writing to translate the Bible from German (it remained unpublished; the manuscript is in safekeeping in Goettingen, Germany). The Postilla is one of the first beautifully illustrated books in the Lithuanian language.
