Lexicool.com a été mis en ligne en décembre 2000. Dès le départ, l'objectif de lexicool.com a été de créer un outil de recherche qui soit aussi complet et aussi performant que possible pour les linguistes et en particulier pour les traducteurs et les interprètes. Le site est administré par une équipe internationale de linguistes et informaticiens basés en France. Le travail de l'équipe consiste en la recherche et le répertoriage de tout dictionnaire/glossaire bilingue et/ou multilingue disponible librement sur Internet. Chaque ressource trouvée est notée aussi objectivement que possible selon sa présentation, sa facilité d'utilisation, son utilité générale et sa taille (nombre d'entrées, nombre de langues). De cette notation dépend la position du dictionnaire/glossaire dans les résultats des recherches. La qualité du contenu n'est pas notée. Actuellement, l'annuaire contient plus de 3500 liens et chaque jour de nouvelles ressources sont ajoutées. Le fonctionnement de tous les liens du répertoire est vérifié tous les deux mois.
